Using a 3G/4G mobile broadband dongle

You can switch between mobile broadband and wireless backhaul simply by using the Control Panel switches.

To use 3G/4G (whatever is available locally) you need a dongle - these can be obtained as part of the Comms Kit directly from us or you can choose your own. If you are sourcing your own please refer to the web site http://www.skippersmate.co.uk and the Open Source documentation to help you find a dongle that works with the Raspberry Pi and the Skipper's Mate system.

Obtaining a SIM - you will need to buy your own SIM (or a variety if you prefer) to suit the location(s) you intend to use. For example, on the River Dart we find a Three SIM works well and gives us 4G. Obviously the supplier and signal strength will vary according to location so it's up to you to choose.
