Problems untarring ISO

Post by penny » Tue Feb 14, 2017 11:52 am

Posting this on behalf of Lyndon - just sent him a new password so hope he will continue the thread if he has further problems
I am following sm_getting_going_smv1.0.0.3 to install Skipper's Mate on my pi.
All went well until it was time go get the tar file.

First I tried the ISO image unsucessfully.
tar -zxvf skippersmate0.9.2.2.tgz
unregimg
tar: unregimg: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I have unpacked the sources file and it seems that the guide ha not been updated.

Before I continue on, do you have any pointers?

Cheers,
Lyndon
Hi Lyndon

Just re-tested the untar on my machine and it takes 2 or 3 mins to untar but successfully creates unregimg with 644 permissions as me (pw:pw) in the same directory where the source tar.gz is, and where the command was issued. Sounds a bit odd that you wouldn't have permission to create a file in a directory where, presumably, you wrote the tar.

Can you give me more info pls ?

Still no luck. I downloaded the file again. today's result:
$ tar -zxvf skippersmate0.9.2.2.tgz
unregimg
tar: unregimg: Wrote only 2560 of 10240 bytes
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

The skippersmatesources untared so I think I will give that way a go.

I switched to try using skippersmatesources.

From the skippersmatesources0.9.2.2.tgz README file:

2. There is a shell script "smbuildall.sh" at the top level of the sm directory. This should compile all system binaries and copy them to the correct directories. Note that this should be run by a user with passwordless (is that a word) sudo superuser access.

file not there

The html/css/php/js files under var/www..... just need to be copied to the relevant directories under the var/www tree.

Are these files put there by the missing script?

Unpack tar file. You should be in the root (/) of /mnt/ramdisk.
tar -zxvf sm.tar.gz
This should leave you with the following files and directories - if you list the contents using ls :
etc sm.tar.gz usr var

This is not true if substituting skippersmatesorces0.9.2.2 for sm. Will this be solved by the missing script?

Have successfully untarred the file on the central server (as well as a downloaded version on my machine) . Would it be helpful to make the untarred version available from the Downloads page ? Warning - it will be a 7Gb download !

Whoops ! Documentation error - will have a look at this. Yes, skippersmatesources0.9.2.2 is the correct file to untar.

Hi Keith,

You don't need top open the unregimg file. This is a RPI image that should be burnt straight to an SD card. You can then boot your RPI from it.
