At the beginning my minority of questions

Post by sq5npw » Mon Feb 18, 2019 2:32 pm

I have already read as well pdf documentation as knowledge base on forum.
I found answers for majority of questions and below my minority of doubts.
I guess the SkippersMate system is as great as simple or vice versa.

I would like to build my own SkippersMate system with BCU and some SCU's on
RPI 3B or 3B+ board and I will be able to use it with Central Server.
What above hardware do you suggest to do it?

I can create SD card from your ISO - now avaliable version: 0.9.2.8
or install raspbian-lite and setup SkippersMate from scratch using
skippersmatesources0.9.2.2.tgz with an "Open Source Manual for geeks" pdf.
Which way will be better and well supported?

Which Raspbian version I can use in that "Source" case?
Newest Raspbian stretch lite will be good?

Hi Jerzy,

Either the Pi3b or Pi3b+ will be fine. The system will also run on the older Pi models if you have one laying around.

Now that we have stopped supplying hardware we are busy compiling a list of sensor units etc. The majority are available from Ebay. Do you intend to connect to the central server using 4G. If so, we highly recommend the type of dongle which presents itself as an ethernet device, often referred to as HiLink.

Would recommend setting up from the ISO image, it's much simpler. The sources are available for those who may wish to inspect or modify the system. Support for either is the same - through this board. Response times depend on whether w are sailing or not. :D

I would recommend Stretch Lite - the latest ISO is built on it.

Cheers,

Colin

Hi Colin,

Thank you very much for your valuable answers above.

How can I find you on ebay? I found only SkippersMate on Australia ebay.

How can I get latest ISO based on Stretch? On your website in the Download section there is
still 0.9.2.8 version, based on Jessie.

I would like to share my experience so far with ISO in Version : 0.9.2.8

* When I boot my BCU RPI from SD Card with new image, I cannot see at all SkippersMate Wi-fi network.
I found solution in the manual document "Skipper's Mate - What To Do With an ISO" pdf (sm_iso_v1.0.1.pdf file) in the last chapter "TROUBLESHOOTING" (page 21) Step 5 Remove the saved wireless device information
As a pi user I made a commands:

Code: Select all

$ sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent*
$ reboot
* Unfortunatelly I have not UK keyboard and I changed keyboard layout and locale using:

Code: Select all

$ sudo raspi-config
    4.Localisation Options
        I1.Change Locale -> en.US.UTF8 and C.UTF8 - I choose
        I2.Change Timezone -> Europe/Warsaw - in my case
        I3.Change Keyboard Layout -> US and ENTER for all further questions
        I4.Change Wi-fi Country -> PL - in my case

* On the BCU started with above ISO image the internal Bluetooth was constantly turned off.
System wasnt able to find own BT Device:

Code: Select all

pi@skipBCU:~ $ hcitool dev
Devices:
I solved this issue. I first found the cause of dead Bluetooth:

Code: Select all

pi@skipBCU:~ $ systemctl status hciuart
* hciuart.service - Configure Bluetooth Modems connected by UART
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/hciuart.service; disabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)
I edited as root (sudo) a file: /boot/config.txt. The last line of this file was:

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt
I replace it with:

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=pi3-miniuart-bt
and add two new lines at the end:

Code: Select all

core_freq=250
enable_uart=1
After that I started hciuart.servise:

Code: Select all

$ sudo systemctl start hciuart
Then I was able to see status:

Code: Select all

pi@skipBCU:~ $ systemctl status hciuart
* hciuart.service - Configure Bluetooth Modems connected by UART
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/hciuart.service; disabled)
   Active: active (running) since Mon 2018-10-29 16:48:16 CET; 26s ago
  Process: 1165 ExecStart=/usr/bin/btuart (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
 Main PID: 1187 (hciattach)
   CGroup: /system.slice/hciuart.service
           +-1187 /usr/bin/hciattach /dev/serial1 bcm43xx 460800 noflow - b8:27:eb:51:82:01
pi@skipBCU:~ $ hcitool dev
Devices:
        hci0    B8:27:EB:51:82:01
To setup Bluetooth start after reboot:

Code: Select all

$ sudo systemctl enable hciuart
Now Bluetooth will be work forever.

- All the best, Jerzy

Hi Jerzy,

My apologies, the ISO is as you say based on Jessie not Stretch. I'll update this but it may take a little while - we are currently working on the boat ready for the new season. :D

We are not on Ebay, as I mentioned we have stopped selling hardware as the situation with Brexit is too uncertain for us to hold stocks any more. Almost all the sensors are available on Ebay, just not from us.

The internal bluetooth is disabled by design as we have experienced conflicts with the internal wireless. We recommend a bluetooth dongle. These are very cheap and consume very little power. Are you using a 3b+? If so the issue may be solved. If you are and it is I'd be delighted to hear.

Cheers,

Colin

Colin,

Ok, I will check how internal BT work on RPI 3B+ and let you know. It would be helpful to find out where to look for such conflicts if they occur

I will wait for ISO based on Stretch. Please notify me how the new version will be published

Recently I noticed by accident that a new version of sketchbook.zip was published. There is no version number either date for this file. I also found differences in ISO files. File skippersmate0.9.2.8.tgz is newer skippersmate0.9.2.8.tgz.

The Illustrated Notes - Assembling a Skipper's Mate System document is very helpful. However, I miss a list of devices that you have used and checked.

Yes, I am interested in 4G as you suggested and found it: Huawei E3372 HiLink.

I would be grateful for a short list of proven devices - such as:
  • GPS dongle
  • Wi-fi dongle
  • USB Hub type
  • Bluetooth dongle (ver. 2 or 4)
  • Bluetooth board for SCU
Do not worry, your answers appear very quickly for me. I could wait no more without a problem. I'm jealous of work on your boat. For now, it is still too cold in Poland. I will start my work propably in April. Now I am building and testing the SkippersMate system at home.

I have a problem with cooperation of my current SM installation with Central Server.
Visit Boat doesnt work.

I get a window with a TIMEOUT message. I always synchronise and login with registrating user successfully. My registered login is sq5npw.

This is error message in web browser:
This site can’t be reached 78.46.110.147 took too long to respond.
Search Google for 110 147 7094 pcl smsignin
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
I would like to ask for help in solving this problem

Hi Jerzy,

We found that having the internal bluetooth switched on caused lockups/drop outs son thewireless interface. It also caused dropouts on the bluetooth interface. Switching to an external dongle solved both problems,

I will upgrrade the ISO to stretch but not for a little while. In the meantime the Jessie based ISO is fine to use.

I updated the sketches archive last week because someone pointed out that I had omitted the barometric pressure
sketch. I'd also missed out a new sketch for the dht22 temperature/humidity sensor. Nothing else changed.

We'll update the assembly notes in the next few days to give some info on the devices required.

The 4G dongle you suggest should work but see https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... berry-pi-3 and also https://www.skippersmate.co.uk/skippers ... =6&t=13808

Could you post the exact url that shows in the url bar of your browser when tou try to visit boat? Thanks.

Back to the varnishing!

Cheers,

Colin

Thanks a lot Colin.
I installed a BT dongle ant it works.
I will start with 4G with next week.

I will wait for Stretch to test on RPI 3B+.

Threre is not a VoltSense in new sketches. I found it in sources.

Now the most important thing for me is the problem with "Visit my boat"
I have tried now and get:

http://78.46.110.147:7094/pcl/sm/smsignin.html
ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE

Kind Regards,
Jerzy

Thanks
